Baby Steps to an iPod Nano Jailbreak

The iPod Nano touch 6th generation (the touch screen one) has recently been hacked. It allows for blank springboard icons, similar to iBlank on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Although this is very minor it is actually a big leap forward knowing that the iPod can be bypassed. Somepeople have began to call it jailbreaking or saying that a jailbreak can't be far behind. If it is indeed jailbroken it will allow for some wanted features such as changing the wallpaper. However, the iPod nano's screen size and lack of Wi-Fi will make it very complicated to do things that are worthwhile. Regardless of how and if the iPod nano will be jailbroken here is the progress so far:

FCC says u get 2 txt 911 [21st century 911]

On Tuesday November 23, an FCC chairman announced their plans to revoloutionize the nation-wide emergency response, 911. Their plans include broadband, being able to text 911, and MMS 911, and devices being able to dispatch emergency services.

Why Texting?

Texting 911 can prove to be a life-saving option. If you are in a position were talking can jeopardize your well-being, such as hiding in a hostile situation, sending a text message can be the most helpful option. Also, this can help the deaf or hard-of-hearing in requesting emergency assistance.

Why MMS?

MMS will a great tool that can help law enforcements "catch the bad guys". If there was a robbery you can take a picture of it and send it to 911. You might even be able to record suspicious activity and send it to a dispatcher.

Greenpois0n iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak coming your way...

The Tweet

A tweet by @p0sixninja says that the Greenpois0n will be updated to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 within the next couple of days. Sadly, this is not going to be an untethered jailbreak. The good news is it will be a tethered or semi tethered jailbreak. Semi-tethered should be enough to entice those discouraged by a tethered jailbreak.

What is a Semi-Tethered jailbreak?

Contrary to an untethered jailbreak that you can turn your phone on and off without any problems a semi-tethered jailbreak will allow you turn your phone on but you will not be able to use or launch any jailbreak tweaks, themes or applications.  This is also contrasted to a tethered jailbreak that will not allow you to use your device at all until you rerun the jailbreaking software on your computer if you reboot.

The Tweaks your App Switcher Has Been Begging For

There are many tweaks for the iPhone's App Switcher such as remove recent. However, 2 tweaks can prove to be especially useful; app switcher brightness, and app switcher rotator. The latter has proved to be something that iOS 4 should have had from the beginning.

App Switcher Rotator
This is a particularly useful tweak when you are in landscape mode. When you are in landscape mode the icons rotate to be easily readable in landscape orientation. The great thing is, it rotates the icons only and the icon drawer changing very little. Also it provides a bit an animation when the order of items in the drawer changes. After which the icons slide back into their new places.

App Switcher Brightness
This is a useful app similar to App Switcher Volume. Beneath the play, pause, next, and previous buttons it displays a slider that controls your screens brightness. This is a nice way to do so in an integrated way as opposed to  SB Settings that requires: activation, entering a sub-menu, and then changing the brightness. It is important to not that this will conflict with App Switcher Volume. Right now, App Switcher Volume seems obsolete unless you have broken volume buttons.

Skyfire "Sold Out" due to overwhelming user response

The sky fire app browser has recently been pulled from the app store because it apparently sold out due to incredible response from users. The browser plays flash by downloading it onto it's servers and rendering it into an HTML 5 video playable on any iPhone or iPod Touch. The servers were overwhelmed in a couple of hours. So they announced that they will temporarily stop selling this application until they can take this kind of serve load. To put into perspective the kind of strain that their servers are taking, within five hours this application became the highest grossing app, the overall top paid app and the top in utilities

AlwaysOnPC

The AlwaysOnPC app is a great app that allows you to have your own personal workspace; a complete desktop equipped with FireFox, oppenoffice and many other vital apps. And because its your own workspace, you can save documents and keep your browsing history and bookmarks even when you log out. I am currently writing this blog post through this application. I works very well and handles flash well too It works fantastic on the iPhone 3G proving low battery and recourse usage. A for people who need to use their iPad as a computer there is simply not a better choice than this application. This application costs $20. But that is a fair price for what it does. If you like to "try before you buy" than you can use installous.

Super Simple Guide for First time Jailbreakers

After you've jailbroken you might be wondering what to do. For first time jailbreakers here's a super simple guide to help you guys started. It includes one tweak, one app, and a theme. Let me know how it all turns out or if you would like to remove any of the below.
1. Open Cydia, go to "manage" then "sources" and add the source "sinfuliphonerepo.com"
2. Search "android lock" You should see something like "Android Lock XT cracked" Select that but make sure it's "cracked"
3. Install "Winterboard" It is a program that allows you to install cool themes. Here is where select the themes you have downloaded.
4. Install "Neuroline". It is a moving wallpaper similar to the Google Nexus One. After installing it go back to winterboard and select the theme like so:
Definition of cracked: an app that normally costs money but is a pirated version of that app.

Things you can't sell in the Mac App Store

Apple has announced the Mac App Store, similar to the one on the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. This brought forth tons of mixed feelings about this new feature. There are definitely some great upsides to this. Developers who choose to participate in this app store will no longer have to deal with credit card processing, or paying for hosting and bandwidth. Also, developers will get higher app exposure and updates can be rolled out to consumers in a much easier way. However large companies like Adobe wont want to sell their software on the app store when Apple can charge up to $510 per copy for "upkeep". Another complaint is Apple's control over this App Store. Apple has already made a whole list of apps they will not be allowing on the app store. These are a few of they're guidelines.

1.
Apps with "Easter Eggs:" Apps that include undocumented or hidden features inconsistent with the description of the app will be rejected.
2.
No beta apps: Apps in "beta," "trial" or "test" versions will be rejected.
3.
No duplicate apps: Apps that duplicate apps already in the App Store may be rejected, particularly if there are many of them.
4.
No drinking/drugs: Apps that encourage excessive consumption of alcohol or illegal substances will be rejected.
5.
No License Keys: Apps that require the entry of a license key will be rejected.
6.
No Java?: Apps that use deprecated or optionally installed technologies (e.g. Java, Rosetta) will be rejected.
7.
No auto-run: Apps that are set to auto-launch or have other code automatically run at startup or login without user consent will be rejected. Similarly, apps can't automatically add their icons to the dock or desktop.
8.
No copying Apple!: Apps that look similar to Apple Products or apps bundled on the Mac, including the Finder, iChat, iTunes and Dashboard, will be rejected.
9.
OS X may not be changed: Apps that change the native user interface elements or behaviors of Mac OS X will be rejected.
10.
No rentals: Apps containing "rental" content and services that expire after a limited time will be rejected.
11.
No RSS Readers?: Apps that are simply web clippings, content aggregators, or a collection of links may be rejected.
12.
No data collection: Apps cannot transmit data about a user without obtaining the user's prior permission and providing the user with access to information about how and where the data will be used.
13.
No Chatroulette clones?: Apps that include games of Russian roulette will be rejected.
14.
Define "objectionable:" Apps that present excessively objectionable or crude content will be rejected.
15.
No porn. Of any kind. (Porn as it's defined by "Webster's Dictionary," that is).
16.
No gambling. Of any kind.
17.
No file-sharing: No P2P apps - apps that enable illegal file sharing will be rejected.
18.
Religious apps must be for educational purposes only: Apps may contain or quote religious text provided the quotes or translations are accurate and not misleading. Commentary should be educational or informative rather than inflammatory.

Heytell

Heytell is a  cross-platform voice messenger that It allows for walkie talk like communication, across the whole world. It  functions on on EDGE, 3G, and of course, Wi-Fi. They claim it uses no more data than an email. So this does have potential for roaming. Especially if you have prepurchaed roaming data. This application includes many perks; one of them being you don't need an account. All you need is a contact entry of yourself. After that, select a friend and start talking.

Another great feature is the "map" feature or the location feature. This allows you to share your location with someone else. This feature is completely safe and you cant share your location accidentally. If the map is displayed, your location is shared, but only if you're talking to some one and it is only shared to that person.

This application is available for both iPhone and Android.

Verizon to Sell iPad, Nope Not like That

Beginning October 28, Verizon will start selling the Apple iPad at more than 2,000 stores across the US. The catch is (Did you really think it was going to be that easy?) they will only carry the Wi-Fi model, but they will bundle it with their mobile hotspot, the Verizon MiFi, so you can tether. Althogh this may not be as sleek and elegant as the 3G iPad, if AT&T doesn't cover your area the added bulk is better than no coverage.

This combo will cost $630 for the 16 GB, $730 for the 32 GB, and $830 for the 64 GB. Apart from that, the MiFi service will cost $20 for 1 GB of data. Like AT&T's current rates, it does not require a contract. Going on vacation for a month? Turn it off and save a cool $20.

AT&T will step up their game as well on the same day of October 28th selling iPads in their stores too. Of course, they will sell the 3G model.

"It’s interesting that Apple has allowed AT&T’s main competitor to sell the tablet, and it may hint at a newfound partnership between the two companies."

MyWi updated

The almost famous app for jailbroken iPhones that allows you to tether your iPhone has sweetened the deal, updating Cydia's (Not Rock's, read more below) app to fully support iOS 4.1.The new version addresses iOS 4 woes through numerous issues for iOS 4.1 users as well as some other miscellaneous
fixes and improvements.

If you don't know what MyWi is, it is an application that allows you to tether your iPhone to any device capable of Ad-hoc Wi-Fi. It creates a portable hotpot allowing for incredibly easy tethering. It costs $19.99. Many have complained of the so called "steep" price of the application. However, if you did the traditional US AT&T tethering you would have to downgrade to 2GB AND pay an extra $20! For everyone out there who is lucky enough to have US T-Mobile or anything but AT&T , count your blessings :)

4.8 Updates
● Fix for 4.1 USB users
● Fix for when WiFi is Powered Off prior to turning on MyWi
● Improved UI Switch on/off response

You can purchase MyWi from the Cydia Store for $19.99

Steve Jobs responds to iTunes icon e-mail.

An e-mail is sent to Steve Jobs complaining about the new iTunes icon. It pointed out that it ruined over 10 years of instant product recognition. Some people have started to amateurish.

Apple announced the reason behind this change, however, saying that iTunes will likely surpass physical CD sales. So it's time to make CDs of thing of the past.

These changes have even triggered applications such as iTunes 109 that returns to look and feel of iTunes 9.

For those who wanted to see what he wrote.

Steve,

Enjoyed the presentation today. But...this new iTunes logo really sucks. You're taking 10+ years of instant product recognition and replacing it with an unknown. Let's both cross our fingers on this...

He simply wrote back with one of his brief, to-the-point emails:
We disagree.

iTunes 109

Hate iTunes 10's new icons? Then check this out! iTunes 109 is an app that will tweak iTunes into looking like iTunes 9. And don't worry if you happen to change you mind. Simply run the installer and theres an option to remove any and all changes made to iTunes with iTunes 109.

How does iPod Touch 4G FaceTime Work?

If you have an iPhone 4 and you want to FaceTime with someone you can call them and then click the FaceTime button. With an iPod Touch you cant call and you don't have a number to distinguish you from another iPod Touch owner. So, how does Apple go about this? They use email addresses. Namely Apple ID's. So, you can use the email you already have with the Apple ID or as Apple says "just enter your Apple ID and email address. Or create a new email account just for FaceTime. Using FaceTime is as easy as it gets. Say you want to start a video call with your best friend over Wi-Fi. Just tap the FaceTime app and find her entry to start the call. An invitation pops up on her iPod touch or iPhone 4 screen asking if she wants to join you. When she accepts, FaceTime begins. It’s all perfectly seamless. And it works in both portrait and landscape. See how much fun you can have."

      iPod Touch 4G

Today at the Yerba Buena conference by apple they released a number of new products. One of which was new the iPod touch. It now has face time, a retina display and a HDR camera and obviously, a front facing camera with the A4 chip that is included in the iPad and the iPhone 4. It also comes with a 40 hour battery. Wow!

“Video calling is in full effect on iPod touch. Now your friends can see what you’re up to, when you’re up to it. With the tap of a button, you can wave "hi" while standing in a foreign country, get a second opinion on a pair of boots, or have your friends bear witness to the everyday pranks, bets, and dares they otherwise might have missed — new iPod touch to new iPod touch or iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. And come face to face with even more fun.”

      iPod Nano Touch

The new iPod nano has just been announced and it is truly fantastic! It is now a small square that has multi touch screen, and comes with 4.1! iOS 4.1 comes with Gamecenter, HDR camera and more. HDR is “High Dynamic Range photos. Telcel Hints at iPhone Hardware update

Marco Quatorze, Telcel's Director of Value Added Services in Mexico, says that Apple will release a new  iPhone 4 hardware update by the end of September that will fix the reception issues facing this new iPhone.

As of September 30 Telcel will be available in new devices that do not have the malfunction of the reception and explained that the company will have several options to make changes from one phone to another flawed not to take: "If the previous plan is over, you will need to hire a new change for iPhone 4. If, for example, already has one and take three months for payment, change the cell with a re-employment and takes into account the previous time, so instead of paying 24 months, only done in 21."

It's unclear whether the statement has been verified by apple or the director of Telcel is simply assuming a hardware update will come out because of the end of Apple free bumper case program. Its’ possible, though unlikely, that Apple will announce something about a the iPhone 4’s reception problems.

      Auto3G

Auto3G is an app that disable 3G when your iPhone or iPod Touch is locked. This can double your battery life. As explained By Apple you get 7 hours of talk time on 3G but you get 14 hours of talk time on using the 2G network. This app is available from Cydia. This app cost a hefty $6 so if you want the cracked version follow the video below...

      The San Diego Sony Store

This week I'm in San Diego and I thought I should go to a nearby tech store, namely an apple store or something of that nature. What I found however, was a Sony store. I was pleasantly surprised. It shows  their new products, Including the new 3D TV. Yes, its stunning. Although my Apple store beats it by miles, because of the fact of their new, new products and apple geniuses this store has great prices and great devices. If you live in San Diego I recommend going to the Sony Store. Just to take a quick look.

Universal Charger, now a reality. In Europe, that is

The European Union has got over 10 mobile device giants including Apple, Motorola to sign a universal charger agreement. This is practical for many reasons. First off you go anywhere or ask anyone and you know they'll have the charger for your phone because they're all the same. Also from ecological standpoint this is great because you have one charger for your iPhone your bluetooth you sons cell phone your other son's cell phone and your daughters phone, all these devices one charger. Experts say this will come to the US too, the question is when.

      Gmail gets a makeover

Google announced that they "pruned their pixels" and shot for a completly new look in gmail. They moved Mail, Contacts, and Tasks to the top. In my opinion, this was a much need change, becuase before all the important parts of gmail were lost among the jumbled mess of other buttons. Now, everyhting I need is at the top and grouped together. Way to go Google!

PC vs Mac, PC winner? Yeah, right!

Microsoft has recently launched an anti-Mac page attempting to convince you that PCs are better than Macs. They state 6 main reasons saying why you should ditch your Mac.

      1. Macs might spoil your fun.

iPad vs Windows 7 Tablet Showdown

A Windows 7 tablet and an Apple iPad have been put to the test in a head-on battle. Lordfingle shows both devices doing similar everyday tasks. These include Web browsing, video, e-mail, and calendar.

      Windows 7 Tablet

      vs.

      The Apple iPad

      iPad

      Weight- 1.5 Pounds

      Hometown- Cupertino, CA

      Windows Tablet
      Weight- 2.11 pounds
      Hometown- Made in China

The iPad was the clear winner in the showdown. Although the Windows 7 tablet did have some things that were better then the iPad. Overall, the iPad was far more superior. The only notable thing that the Windows 7 Tablet was better than the iPad at was web browser speed. The browser itself is a Windows 7 tablet was overall very badly designed. Zooming in and zooming out was glitchy and it wasn't very smooth.

      App Store Volume Purchase Program

Apple just released a program to give 50% discounts for educational institutions called the app store volume purchase program. They're given discount when purchased in bulk, meaning 20 copies or more. Developers are given this option to add the program to all or only some of their apps.

      Big Brother Camera App

The new big brother app has just been released. This app is for safeguarding your iPhone. When set it you must enter a passcode to gain access to your iPhone. If it is incorrect it will notify you by e-mail. The report includes the location, time, and two pictures of the user. If the app is quit, the location, time, and yes two pictures will be sent. The only downside is that it's a one-time shot if it's stolen. Thats's because the person is highly unlikely to start the app again. But the face should be enough to regain your iPhone. It should be good to point out however that this is iPhone 4 only.

Is Magic trackpad a viable choice?

The magic trackpad has been praised and questioned leading some users to think is the magic trackpad really a viable choice?

Yay!- It does everything the magic mouse can do and more and because it's a large square you can effectively do gestures. That's a huge plus.

Nay- Although it is new and has a bunch of features some people prefer an actual mouse for large screens.

      Should I buy it?

I cant really tell so I recommend going to the apple store and see for yourself and see what suites you the best.

      I Jailbroke, Now What?

Some users face this million dollar question when they jailbreak while others instantly install winterboard and look for the most cool, slow, memory hogging, performance depriving theme. While still others don't do anything. And blew off their warranty for nothing. So here's my list of top 10 jailbroken applications and tweaks.

      1. Installous
      2. iFile
      3. SB Settings
      4. Cycorder
      5. Open SSH
      6. YourTube
      7. Safari download manager
      8. e-mail attachments
      9. AppSync 4.x
      10. GV mobile

      Hackulo.us Position on Cracked Apps

A new post by Hackulo.us has recently addressed questions about the legality and morality of installous and about how it affects developers. They eventually concluded that installous is good. Why? They stated three key concepts. Number one is its trial utility that allows users to download a complete out for free and then they can decide if they want to buy it.

Second is increasing visibility. They are saying that there are many amazing but unknown apps and are maybe only known to a small group of developers. If it is cracked on a site such as app tracker which has ton of unique visitors each month, this app could be better exposed to people

      Jailbreakme now Banned?

The new jailbreak method jailbreakme created by comex has recently been banned, not to my surprise, in Apple stores. When one tries to access jailbreakme.com they are redirected to apple.com this is because of the large number of iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads using this new jailbreaking method.

      The Best Jailbreak Method Ever?

You may have heard of the new jailbreaking method called "Jailbreak Me". It's said to be the best jailbreaking method ever. So, is it? And how do you do it?

First of all it doesn't require a computer. What, no computer? Yep, no computer. That's because it's a browser based jailbreak. It uses a browser based exploit to be able to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch from the browser. Simply go to jailbreakme.com and slide the slider which says slide to jailbreak. Wait a couple of minutes and after it's complete you should have Cydia on your home screen.

Is it the easiest jailbreak method ever?

•Absolutely! Not only is it the easiest way, it works with all devices on all firmwares. But if you plan to have a jailbroken iPhone 4, you better buy it quick because apple just announced that they will be patching this exploit.

      Advancements in Technology

The amount of advancement in technology and computing is enormous. A couple years back the average consumer didn't have even remotely the access of computing power accessible to them we do now. In fact, scientists estimate that in 2030 a computer will be more powerful than the human brain at its full capacity. Humans, in general, have relied more and more on computers for everything.

      iOS4 Review

Two days ago I made a post about iOS4. Today I thought I should make a hands on review. Anyways, I took some screenshots and decided to rate iOS4 on some key aspects.
      1. Functionality and ease of use
      2. New features
      3. Eye candy

First up is functionality and ease of use. iPhones and iPod touches in general have a reputation of being super stable and crashes being rare. Also being easy to use. But all of of power users agree that iPhones and iPod touches are very limited. iPhones lack things that some of the most basic phones have been able to do for years.

      HTML5 Rocks!

You probably know that apple is strongly encouraging web standards especially HTML5 for multimedia. Google is no different.   And as if Adobe or Flash needed another blow to the face Apple released an HTML5 showcase. The only catch was it was Safari only. If you didn't use Safari you'd be greeted by a pop up telling you to install safari in order to view this. Now Google release an HTML5 playground called HTML5Rocks (No, really that's what its called) Anyways Google, believing in openness, allows you to use ANY browser. The only thing is that its coded for Google Chrome. So they say that they recommend chrome. But they will not restrict who can view

Google Voice now Open for Everyone!

Slightly  over a year ago, (At the Google I/O I believe)  Google released a preview of Google Voice. The web-based phone with text and voice mails. It was service that allowed you to have one Google Voice number and for that, later, to ring all your phones. Also they had a brand new way of voice mail. When people called you and left a voice mail their voice was turned into text. Which you could later hear. They allowed you to make unlimited national calls in the US & Canada. And if you need to make an international calls you can make "...low-priced international calls and more"

The thing was that it was not open to everyone. You had to fill out a form and after a lengthy period of time (For me it was a couple of weeks) you got an invite. Today Google announced that "after lots of testing and tweaking, we’re excited to open up Google Voice to the public, no invitation required." That means you head on to www.google.com/voice and create an account.

If you haven’t yet tried Google Voice or just heard about it, try it out and give Google some feedback. Apple and Google are some of the few companies that care about customer support. (IMHO) If haven’t seen what Google Voice can do yet, the video below provides a clear view of what it is, in about 2 minutes.

      iOS4

iOS4 has just been released today! This update will bring a boatload of new features some very noticeable others not so much. Anyways, only some iDevices will be supported fully. And some not at all. If you want to  know if you're supported cross your fingers and read some more.

iPod touch 1G- Sorry, no update
      iPhone 2G- Nada here either
iPod touch 2G- Only some features including: Game Center, Unified Inbox, Folders, iBooks, iAds
iPhone 3G (Mine)- Also partial support. Game Center, Unified Inbox, Folders, iBooks, iAds
NOTE: (Icons and wallpapers don't go together on 3G-Steve (Paraphrasing). I think jailbreakers disagree)
iPod touch 3G- Multitasking, Folders, Game Center, Unified Inbox, iBooks, iAds, Wallpapers for Homescreen
iPhone 3GS: Multitasking, Folders, Game Center, Unified Inbox, iBooks iAds, Wallpapers for Homescreen
      iPhone 4: Everything
iPad: iOS 4 update later this year

      Major Changes
iOS4 brings minor usually unnoticed changes to iDevices as well as some major features. Some of the biggest ones are: Folders, Multitasking, Spellcheck, and springboard wallpaper. As well as iAds to some people.

Folders-  Folders should be somewhat self explanatory. Some cool features about folders is that you just drag on app on another. It creates a folder intelligently named by the categories of each of the apps. A great perk is that it has amazing speed and integrates amazingly with OS. This will be most appreciated by Jailbreakers using categories.

Multitasking- Multitasking has long been the holy grail for iPhone users. Many complain that other phones can do it, so why doesn't the "magical" device do it. Simple: Apple only releases something when its rock-solid and utterly stable. Multitasking is no different. Especially when you do it better. Some apps which are "multitasking ready" don't really run in the background. They save where they left off and close. Comparable to "hibernate" on PCs.

Spellcheck- To me this is a feature I have been waiting for. It allows my iPhone to be better suited for work needs. If I'm unable to get home and need to work on something. I just open up notes and when finished email it. Now I don't have to painstakingly proofread myself on the tiny screen. Interestingly enough, spellcheck has recently become a nuisance to some who regularly swear on their phones. Auto-correct (bundled with spellcheck) now replaces profanity.

Springboard wallpaper- This is a feature I have been waiting endlessly for from apple. I happily download iOS4 even though it took me like 4 hours total. I knew it was worth it. I then tried to set it as my wallpaper. Didn't work. Eh... not too bad; 1-800 MY APPLE. 20 minutes with some guy who doesn't know what he is talking about. "Just reinstall" I've finally had enough and ask to speak with someone more senior. He begrudgingly agrees. The guy promptly says 3G is not supported. At least he knew what he was talking about. Sad, I say hangup and wish I had an iPhone 4. Anyways to all you lucky 3GS and New iPhone 4 owners :P Just kidding! Have fun!
